Awesome DNC Events
No sports news today — we were out all day hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, getting caught in an afternoon rainstorm, and then enjoying beer and pizza.
Things are starting to get exciting and convention-y here in Denver. I was just scrolling through the list of DNC events on The Denver Post website — holy crap, there are a million events. Here’s the highlight for tomorrow:
Shake Your Money Maker — Denver Mint
Monday, Aug 25 12:00p
at United States Mint, Denver, CO
Open to the public. Join us as we encircle the Denver Mint (where U.S. currency is produced) and use our collective power to raise the mint building in the air and shake the money out of it for the people.
I might have to take an early lunch and check this out.
Players We Like: New Deal for J.R. Smith
Good news! J.R. Smith (who used to be a player we didn’t like all that much, but that changed last year when he got his shit together) just got a new three-year deal with the Nuggets.
Trust me when I say that he’s going to be even more awesome this coming season. He’s been working out all summer and if you combine his pure athleticism with his improved attitude and new-found maturity, he’s going to be in-freaking-sane.
Keeping J.R. was crucial, considering what the Nuggets have lost in the off season (especially Marcus Camby). Currently, the team is worse off than it was at the end of last season, but hopefully things will go better than I expect.
In other news, the Broncos are in action tonight, with the starters expected to play approximately three quarters. I’m still calling for them to go 8-8 this year. The Rockies are out of it and the White Sox are up against the Rays (which is okay because the Twins are at the Angels this weekend).
There’s also some breaking news about a new Olympics scandal, this time with boxing scoring. Some Romanian dude commented on the fact that the scoring has been grossly inaccurate and unfair (true). The boxing and Olympics people promptly responded by suspending him and instituting some kind of disciplinary procedure against him. I’ll try to find out more about this and update tomorrow.
Olympic Style
Until now, I’ve managed to refrain from discussing anything related to Olympic fashion. This is more of an achievement than you might think, because I’m kind of into that sort of thing. I’m also extremely bothered by the gymnasts and their scrunchies and 900 barrettes, but that’s already been covered all over the world. So I’ll try to focus on more obscure style statements, and how they might translate to the rest of us.
Tortoise Wheelchair
Dudes. B was looking at random shit on Yahoo last night and found this picture of a tortoise with a custom-made wheelchair. Her name is Arava and her back legs are paralyzed, but she gets around just fine on her little wheels.
Seriously, how cute is that?!
I’ll be back later today with a post on Olympic fashiony stuff (exciting, I know).
Lithuanian Hoops in the Olympics
I’m kind of on sports overload right now. There’s been SO MUCH going on — I’ve spent the last few evenings stuck to the couch watching Olympics on two channels, one or two baseball games, and the occasional football.
Because of this madness, it took me a few days to watch the Lithuania/Russia basketball game I recorded. I finished watching it yesterday. Unfortunately, and I know they’re Lithuania’s best chance at Olympic greatness (so far, we have one bronze, won by wrestler Mindaugas Mizgaitis), I just wasn’t that impressed.
