The Big Issues
B and I get along really well and rarely argue, so I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that we’ve had no trouble deciding on many of the “big” things that go along with having a kid. Here’s where we stand:
- circumcision: no
- vaccines: yes
- breastfeed or formula feed: breastfeed
- diapers: cloth
- sleeping: in our room for the first few months (but not cosleeping) and then in his room
- basketball team: Nuggets
- football team: Bears
- baseball team: undetermined (I’m a White Sox fan and B is a Cubs fan; we’ve decided to abstain from any baseball-related apparel until the kid is old enough to decide for himself, if he even likes baseball).
We’re pretty sure we have first and middle names picked out (that was pretty easy, too). The last name issue was tricky, but we’d pretty much agreed before we found out the gender that we’d give a boy his name and a girl my name (that’s kind of random but also seemed fair; oddly enough, we both thought the baby would be a girl). I have a very difficult last name (think of Lithuanian NBA players who are not Linas Kleiza for an idea) and there’s no way in hell I’m making a kid hyphenate that with anything. So I think we’re going to use my last name as a second middle — the kid doesn’t have to use the name, but I want him to at least have it. If we have a second kid (doubtful, but I’m still pretty gung-ho on adopting someday), he or she will get my last name.
What else? Oh! I’m planning a homebirth with a midwife. Apparently many people think this is totally bizarre, but it makes sense to me. I’ll write more about deciding on a homebirth and all that goes with it later.
Please note that my decisions regarding what to do with my kid are not intended as a judgment of anybody who comes to a different conclusion. There’s so much hate and judgment out there about many of these things, which I think is totally stupid.

I think it’s totally cool re: homebirth. My sister was in much better shape in much less time after the second time around when she did it at home. (She hates hospitals, so no wonder, right?)

R, that’s awesome! I hate hospitals, too (I’ve never stayed in one and it’s probably the “unknown” of them that terrifies the hell out of me).
H, B is a casual Cubs fan. He doesn’t really watch any games (he claims this is because I dominate the TV, which is true, but he wouldn’t watch them anyway) and probably couldn’t name more than three current players. I suspect that most Cubs fans are like this.

You’re still in Denver, right?
Methinks you need to let the kid grow up to be a homer, and Denver will be home.
Good luck with everything, it’s nice to see you’re posting again.

Thanks! And we are still in Denver.
I’m really afraid to raise my kid as a Rockies fan, though. What if it turns him into a Jesus freak?
