Just when you thought things around here couldn’t get more exciting, I’m going to tell you about using cloth diapers when you have a kid who goes to daycare. Try to contain yourself! Back when we were getting started with this, I couldn’t find anything really helpful on the internet. So I figure maybe this will be useful to someone.
First, obviously, you have to find a daycare where they’re willing to use cloth diapers (not all places will). Each facility and each state has its own rules about how to deal with cloth diapers. I remember ours were something like this: (1) each diaper has to have a new cover, if you use separate covers; (2) you have to provide a lined, hard, sealed container for dirty diapers that you have to take with you each day; and (3) you must provide a bag to contain each dirty diaper (plastic bags were the default for this).
Here’s how we do it.
First, I estimated how many diapers Soren would need for a day. For an 8-ish hour day, assuming a change every 2 hours or as needed and a change right before leaving home, I figured we’d need at most 4 diapers every day. So I keep 5 diapers at school (one extra, just in case — no more than this because space is tight).
Then, I prepare the diapers for the next day. This is a rockin’ good time, let me tell you. If a baby is exclusively breastfed, you don’t have to worry about the poop or doing anything special to the diapers. After solid food is introduced and the poops become gross, it’s good to have a plan. I use these liners. I put a liner in each diaper and we’re good to go.
For dirty diapers, we have a plastic Sterlite container (I think we got it at Target or King Soopers), lined with a Planet Wise diaper pail liner, which I wash once a week. Instead of using plastic bags, each dirty diaper goes into a small zippered Planet Wise wet bag. So each diaper goes into a zippered wet bag and then into the lined, plastic container. The whole thing comes home with Soren every day. The little wet bags and diapers go into the diaper pail and are washed with all used diapers every other-ish day.
We use disposable wipes at daycare. Also, we generally use pocket diapers, usually velcro ones (instead of snaps; we use both at home). Our favorite velcro (or hook-and-loop or whatever they’re calling it now) diapers are probably Rumparooz and BumGenius one-size diapers.
