Players We Like: Jamaal Tatum’s Website

August 15, 2008

I haven’t updated about any of the “players we like” in a long time. My new plan is to provide a “players we like” update once a week, let’s say on Fridays, because it is Friday and that’s a day I’m usually too lazy to provide much of substance. I’ll also make a roster that lists all players we like, so that if you’re into that kind of thing, it’s at least somewhat organized.

To get started — there is some good news. Jamaal Tatum has been updating his website, Jamaal Tatum Hoops. There’s a blog/basketball diary, a clothing line (seriously, how cool is he?), video, and my favorite part — pictures. You’re welcome.

Fantasy Football: Pickup of the Year

November 26, 2007

Remember that time I had too much beer while doing my fantasy football live draft and selected Garrett Wolfe? It turns out that drafting a tiny little rookie running back from Northern Illinois University might not have been as crazy as it seemed the next day. Cedric Benson is out for the rest of the season with a leg injury. That means more playing time for the speedy Wolfe, who will back up Adrian Peterson. Of course I dropped Wolfe a while ago, but I hope to get him back just as soon as he clears waivers in my league. If you need a running back, go get him now. I’m serious (I’m also not very good, but you can trust me that Garrett Wolfe is something special).

In other HBP favorites news, I went to my first ever Colorado 14ers game Saturday night to see Jamaal Tatum play for the Idaho Stampede. Unfortunately, Jamaal Tatum was not there playing for the Idaho Stampede on Saturday. Where was he? Was he smoking weed and eating scalloped potatoes? Was he saying, “No, you da ho?” while on the phone with his pals in Carbondale? Was he painting his lawn blue? (Clearly I’m as good at Idaho jokes as I am at fantasy football, sorry.) No, Jamaal Tatum was sitting out this road trip with a high ankle sprain and I am very bummed because I wanted to be that one crazy person who was all “JAMAAAAAAL TATUM!!!!” at the game, kind of like the woman sitting behind us a few Nuggets games ago who screamed “IVERSON!!!!” at the top of her lungs every time anybody did anything, even if Iverson had nothing to do with it (which was so very awesome).

I will write more soon, I promise. We have to talk about the Jon Garland trade and why it made me so very sad.

Good news: Jamaal Tatum in D League

November 2, 2007

Well, that didn’t take long. HBP favorite Jamaal Tatum was drafted by the Idaho Stampede with the fourth pick in the NBA D-League draft yesterday. The Idaho Stampede is affiliated with the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle SuperSonics. Congratulations to Jamaal!

Players We Like: Bad News

October 29, 2007
  • The Atlanta Hawks waived guard Jamaal Tatum earlier this week. If anything is right in this world, he’ll get picked up by someone. Seriously. Jamaal Tatum is AWESOME and needs to be in the NBA.
  • According to the Rocky Mountain News, the Lakers might waive Coby Karl. It’s just a rumor at this point — I’ll keep you posted.

Tatum signed by Hawks

October 5, 2007

HBP favorite Jamaal Tatum was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Hawks on October 2. The 6′2″ guard from Southern Illinois University was on the team’s training camp roster this summer.

Congratulations Jamaal — now please start blogging!

Jamaal Tatum is the new Gilbert Arenas

March 22, 2007

Unfortunately, my favorite team in the NCAA tournament will not be making the trip to the Elite 8 this year. This is fortunate for my brackets, which have Kansas beating Georgetown in the championship game. It’s still a bummer, though. The refs sucked. Those Salukis really grew on me, and it was nice to have a team representin’ for the ILL.

It’s also a bummer because I just realized that Jamaal Tatum is the new Gilbert Arenas.

He recently rigged a trashcan filled with water to fall on an “unsuspecting teammate”; he performed a rap song he wrote when he was in high school over the SIU Arena intercom; he plays “Name that Tune” with Pink Floyd songs; he makes teammates roll their eyes with his antics but also makes everyone laugh; he runs fast as hell, has an incredible work ethic, and kicks some serious ass on the basketball court.

That’s just the kind of awesome that makes me love an athlete. It’s one thing to be good at what you do. It’s another thing to be good at what you do and be such an amazing, funny, cool person who has fun with everything and really just gets it. Oh and also, he’s hot.

You know what would kick ass? If he got drafted and played for the Nuggets next year. I could just see Tatum hanging out with Reggie Evans and playing tricks on teammates and Rocky the mascot. He also would bring something magical to the Nuggets — the ability to play defense consistently and well.

In other news, Iowa hoops coach Steve Alford is leaving the Hawkeyes and heading for New Mexico. Have fun, dude. I hope they can round up a coach who doesn’t suck and win some games next year.
